For a worker to refuse to belong to Union is not to exercise a democratic right; It is to accept benefits that others have worked for without contributing to the costs.

WELCOME TO THE NEWCASTLE TRADES HALL WEB SITE

This site is primarily to promote Unions in the Hunter and to inform not only members but potential members and young people of the benefits of Unionism.

The Newcastle Trades Hall Council (NTHC) currently has 29 Unions affiliated which cover most work areas and job designations in the Hunter.

The Newcastle Trades Hall Council is the peak Union body in the Hunter and works closely with Unions NSW (Labor Council of NSW ) and the Australian Council of Trade Unions ( A.C.T.U. )

This co-operation means that State and National campaigns are co-ordinated and run on behalf of Unions by the NTHC.

At present the Newcastle Trades Hall Councils main campaign is the opposition to the proposed changes to the Workplace Relations Act of 1996 that will begin to move into legislation when the Conservatives take control of the Senate in July 2005.

The current campaign is titled as YOUR RIGHTS AT WORK Worth Fighting For which is supported by the A.C.T.U. and Unions NSW as well as all regional and local Trades and Labour Councils.

The Conservative Governments agenda is to clearly destroy the Union movement to ensure collective bargaining ceases to exist and the cult of the individual prevails.

The Union movement is the only organised force that can stand up to the Governments Draconian agenda and on behalf of the working class we must ensure we not only oppose the Industrial Relations agenda of this Government but its attacks on Health, Education and Welfare.

The next three years will be a test of wills and the working movement has to work co-operatively and  must forge greater links with the community at all levels to ensure the current conservative Government does not become a long term proposition with its divisive and ideological agenda turning Australia into a third world country with third world employment conditions and services only available to the rich.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions about this web site please contact us at info@newtradeshall.com and if people wish to be placed on a Trades Hall mailing list to receive information and bulletins please log on to the above address.
